The CDC recommends an urgent need to prevent diabetes and the complications of diabetes.
• The International Diabetes Institute issued a statement cautioning that type 2 diabetes apprears to be an epidemic in many regions of the world.
• They felt that by the year 2010, the cases of type 2 diabetes will double.
• This will increase the worldwide total from 123 million people to 220 million people afflicted with type 2 diabetes.
More information regarding the statistical updates by the CDC is available on their Web site at: www.cdc.gov/diabetes physical work or play as they used to. |

Cymnema Sylvestre
Gymnema sylvestre, a plant native to India, has been used for the treatment of diabetes for more than 2,000 years. It has been found to increase urine output and reduce hyperglycemia in both animal and human studies. Gymnema's antidiabetic activity appears to be due to a combination of mechanisms. |

Fiber helps prevent diabetes because it slows down the process of converting carbohydrates into glucose, says Diana H. Noren, R.D., a certified diabetes counselor in Georgia. Also, if you eat a high-fiber carbohydrate, your body will respond with less insulin than it would if you eat a low-fiber food, she says. This is better for your overall health because high insulin levels could lead to weight gain and high blood pressure, among other problems. |

Our intent is to help you understand diabetes and develop new skills to control or prevent diabetes.
My patients have proven to me that diabetes can be controlled and cured. They have proven to me that the devastating effects of diabetes can be prevented, diverted, or reversed with much less effort than previously expected.

What about trying to help prevent diabetes by monitoring your chromium levels?
Unfortunately, says Dr. Anderson, there's no good way to test for chromium deficiency. "The only way to find out if supplemental chromium is going to be helpful to you is to try it under a doctor's supervision and see if it improves your blood sugar, insulin, and cholesterol levels," he says.
Your doctor can get a reading of these levels before you start taking supplements. After you've been taking the supplement for a while, the doctor can take a second reading for comparison. |

• High blood pressure. American ginseng contains compounds that regulate both the strength of the heartbeat and blood pressure. If the body is deficient in potassium, these saponins slow the rate at which heart muscle fibers contract. If there is excess potassium, the saponins increase the strength with which heart muscle fibers contract. Maintaining optimal potassium levels also eases high blood pressure. |

Ever seen a guava? This exotic fruit has a thin, light yellow or slightly greenish skin. When buying guava, look for ones that "give" to gentle pressure. But keep in mind that ripe guava bruises easily, so handle with care.
Once they're ripe, eat them quickly because they're only at their peak for about two days. You can refrigerate them for a short period, but they get tough after a couple of days. |

In diabetes, it is commonly used to improve the utilization of blood sugar and thereby reduce it, but there is no clear evidence that regular vitamin C usage alone can prevent diabetes. There are some preliminary reports that ascorbic acid may help prevent cataract formation (probably through its antioxidant effect) and may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma, as well as certain cases of male infertility caused from the clumping together of sperm, which decreases sperm function. |

Can Dietary Supplements Help prevent diabetes?
If you get adequate chromium, zinc, and B6 in your diet, you may be able to prevent or lessen the likelihood of diabetes. If any nutrients stand out above the others as a help in controlling diabetes, they are probably these.
According to Dr. J. B. Bennett, in a talk before the Academy of Orthomolecular Psychiatry, animals developed what appeared to be diabetes when chromium was removed from their food supply, but returned to full health when this element was added back to the diet. |

Monitoring and Preventing Diabetes_
Diabetics and those who wish to prevent diabetes can do a great deal to monitor themselves. It's important to look for the presence of antibodies that attack some part of the body to defend against an ingested allergen. This is easy to see if the symptoms are blatant, but not if they are subtle. The thing to look for is a general lowering of the body's immune response. The best way to see this is to go five days without eating the food (or any of its relatives) you wish to test. |

There is no evidence that L-carnitine will prevent diabetes, although abnormal carnitine metabolism is associated with diabetes. Ongoing research may demonstrate some benefit from L-carnitine supplementation. Animal model work in diabetes has shown improved myocardial function with administration of parenteral L-carnitine.
The claim that L-carnitine may have beneficial effects in Alzheimer's disease is unproved. |

Diagnosing and treating chromium deficiency is simple and should be done as early as possible, as it is much easier to prevent diabetes than to treat it.
Sources: Food refinement, and the loss of topsoil through poor agricultural practices reduce the level of chromium in foods. There are, however, still many good food sources. Since GTF is better absorbed than inorganic chromium, the level and activity of GTF in foods affect how well they supply us with this mineral. |

There is, as yet, no evidence that supplemental vitamin C can prevent diabetes, but a recent study does show that vitamin C supplements may help diabetics overcome several problems they frequently encounter: gum disease, slow wound healing and rapidly aging skin. These benefits are suggested by results that have been obtained in animal experiments with doses that would translate, in humans, to about 3 grams of vitamin C daily. |
| Concerning diabetes, though abnormalities of carnitine metabolism have been reported in diabetics, there is no proof that supplemental carnitine will prevent diabetes.
The claim that carnitine protects against kidney disease apparently arises from reports that the now often noted carnitine deficiency of kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis could be prevented via oral carnitine supplementation. There is no evidence, however, that such supplements will benefit normal individuals who seek to prevent the development of kidney disorders. |

Frederick Banting, the discoverer of insulin, tried to tell us that his discovery was merely a palliative, not a cure and that the way to prevent diabetes was to cut down on "dangerous" sugar bingeing.
"In the U.S. the incidence of diabetes has increased proportionately with the per capita consumption of sugar," he warned. "In the heating and recrystallization of the natural sugar cane, something is altered which leaves the refined product a dangerous foodstuff."8

The Diabetes-Carbohydrate Link
You can do much to prevent diabetes if you begin your infants on no-sugar diets. This is the conclusion of a diabetes researcher, Dr. A. M. Cohen. Avoiding sugar may not be the only way to avoid diabetes, but it is one of the best ways. In rat studies conducted by Dr. Cohen, animals fed refined sugar throughout the day, much as we feed sugar to ourselves, quickly manifested the damaged kidneys and deterioration of the retina that are characteristic of diabetes.138 These results mirror the human studies he has conducted, which are discussed here. |

Nicotinamide has been found to prevent diabetes in alloxan- and streptozotocin-treated mice and rats and in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. In vitro studies have shown that nicotinamide can prevent macrophage- or interleukin-lbeta-induced beta-cell damage. An intervention study in New Zealand using nicotinamide treatment showed a 50% reduction in the development of IDDM over a five-year period.
The mechanism of the possible anti-diabetogenic activity of nicotinamide is not well understood. |
